Medicaid Changes Planned
Tuesday, July 31, 2007

Most adults and many children with disabilities depend upon Medicaid for their health care. The Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) manages Medicaid and they are planning major changes.

FSSA has is contracting with two providers that will offer a choice to each eligible person. The stated goal of this new effort is not to save money but to provide better care, more coordinated care and access to specialists.

One of the key areas of the new plan is to offer greater support to physicians, pay them better to spend the time needed with persons with disabilities, and have a true medical home. How well these goals are met are yet to be determined.

The Arc is following the development of this initiative which is scheduled to begin in 2008. There are many key questions yet to be answered. The Arc staff has met with both of the contractors and is working closely with INARF, the Indiana Association of Area Agencies on Aging and Mental Health America to work through this transition. Keep checking this site for more information.
