2008 Winter Heating Assistance Program
a service of The Arc Master Trust
The Arc of Indiana’s Board
of Directors has approved $50,000 for The Arc’s 2008 Winter Heating Assistance
Program.
This will allow The Arc to assist 500 low-income individuals with disabilities
with $100 toward their winter heating bill.
Funding for the Winter Heating Assistance Program comes from remainder shares
left to The Arc Master Trust.
To apply for assistance, individuals should contact the local chapter of The Arc
in their county, or a local agency providing services
to people with disabilities. Application may also be made through a community
mental health center, Independent Living Center,
Area Agency on Aging, or a district office of the Bureau of Developmental
Disabilities Services. These agencies should be aware of
The Arc’s Winter Heating Assistance Program. The certification form is
available at:

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The Arc
wants to distribute funds as equally as possible throughout
the state. Therefore, applications will initially be capped at ten approved
applications per county – again, first-come, first-served.
Although applications are being accepted now, checks cannot be drafted until
2008 due to auditing requirements. As soon as an application
is accepted, and assuming the ten cap limit has not been met, the agency
submitting the application will receive confirmation. Checks will be
mailed in the first quarter of 2008 to the utility company of the person with a
disability, along with instructions to apply the check to his or
her heating bill.
Following is the criteria for The Arc’s Winter Heating Assistance Program:
1. An agency must submit a completed certification form confirming that the
person is disabled and is a recipient of Supplemental Security Income
(SSI) or Medicaid Disability.
2. The agency must submit documentation along with the form confirming that the
individual is a recipient of SSI or Medicaid Disability.
3. The agency must certify that the $100 will be used to supplement, not
supplant, other sources of revenue used to pay the person’s monthly bills.
4. The program is based on $100 per recipient household. If two people with
disabilities live together in the same household, only one may apply for
assistance.
The Arc of Indiana is pleased to be able to offer the Winter Heating Assistance
Program, now in its 7th year, to low-income Hoosiers with
disabilities.
