Medicaid Support Services Waiver

Indiana's Medicaid Support Services Waiver was approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, effective April 1, 2002.

The Support Services Waiver can provide non- residential community based services to people with developmental disabilities who meet the appropriate "Level of Care" criteria.   Eligible individuals can receive up to $13,500 annually in Support Services, based on their needs.  There is a limit on Respite Services of $2,000.

Who qualifies for the Support Services Waiver?
Any individual who meets the "Level of Care" to be placed in an Intermediate Care Facility for the Mentally Retarded (ICF/MR) and is Medicaid eligible can receive services under the Support Services Waiver. Medicaid eligibility for the Support Services Waiver is based on if the disability is expected to last at least 4 years, and if the individual's gross income is at or below 300% of current SSI -- currently $1,635 per month. By allowing recipients to have an income of $1,635 per month, most individuals will not need to "spend down" their income in order to meet typical Medicaid income guidelines.

As with other waivers, parental income and resources are disregarded when determining eligibility for a child.

What Services are available under the Support Services Waiver?
Respite care, community habilitation and participation, supported employment, prevocational services, educational services, health care coordination, enhanced dental, therapies, transportation, medical equipment and supplies, day habilitation, adult day care services, personal emergency response, family and caregiver training.

How do I apply for the Support Services Waiver?
Contact your local Bureau of Developmental Disability Services (BDDS) Office. They will help make sure you meet the State's definition of Developmentally Disabled, are Medicaid eligible and determine if you meet "Level of Care".

What if I am on a waiting list for another Medicaid Waiver?
If your loved one is on a waiting list for the Autism or DD Waiver, you can remain on that waiting list, but you should also apply for the Support Services Waiver. If you are found eligible for the Support Services, you will also be placed on a waiting list for the Support Services Waiver, but can remain on waiting lists for other waiivers.
