State Announces Interim Crisis Assistance Plan

Opens Application Process for Caregiver Support

Interim Crisis Assistance Plan

Indiana's crisis assistance program ended on June 30, 2010.  Crisis Assistance Services provided specific supports to people with developmental disabilities with extreme behavioral or psychiatric issues including: telephone crisis support, in-home technical assistance, out-of-home short term residential placement, and follow-along post crisis intervention.

An interim plan has been created to serve people receiving Medicaid waiver services or services in a Supported Group Living group home. Please note that this plan is only for those people currently receiving services through a Medicaid waiver or Medicaid funded group home.

Crisis Calls for People Who Do Not Receive Medicaid Waiver or Group Home Services

A comprehensive plan is being developed by DDRS, the Division of Mental Health and Addiction and the Dual Diagnosis Task Force for crisis management services. In the meantime,The Arc of Indiana recommends that people in crisis who do not receive Medicaid waiver or group home services should contact their local Bureau of Developmental Disabilities Office or call 800-545-7763. Please note that these numbers are answered during normal business hours only.

Crisis calls can also be made to the 24 Hour Crisis & Suicide Hotline: 317-251-7575 or 800-273-TALK.

If you or your loved one is in immediate risk or danger call 911.

Crisis Calls for People Receiveing Medicaid Home and Community Based Waiver Services
In a crisis situation, during regular business hours, individuals receiving Medicaid waiver services should contact their case manager for assistance.(Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

If assistance is needed outside of normal business hours, contact an Indiana Professional Management Group (IPMG) case manager, toll free, at 1-800-878-9133. If a case manager is unable to effectively address a situation, he or she may obtain a behavioral management consultant to conduct an in-person assessment for the individual. The behavioral management consultant will identify steps needed to stabilize the individual and coordinate with the case manager to obtain necessary services.

Crisis Calls for People Receiving Supervised Group Living (Group Home) Services
Individuals in crisis who receive services in Supervised Group Living homes should contact their service coordinator for assistance during regular business hours. If assistance is needed outside of regular business hours, contact a service coordinator at 1-877-240-1764. The service coordinator will follow the same procedure as a case manager to assess the situation and determine if a behavioral clinician's support is necessary. Service coordinators will work with the behavioral clinician to identify how the individual should best be supported.

Outreach Services Program Ends
Outreach Services will no longer take individual-specific referrals or provide in-person training, this includes the Psychriatric Consultation Services program. A complete list of Outreach Fact Sheets and Reminders isavailable online at www.in.gov/fssa/ddrs/3948.htm. Caregiver Support - Application for Services Can be Made Beginning July 12, 2010

Indiana's Caregiver Support Program was suspended in February, 2010. The state announced on June 29, 2010 that applications for Caregiver Supports Services will be made available beginning on Monday, July, 12, 2010 at all local Bureau of Developmental Disability Services (BDDS) district offices. Caregiver Support Services may be approved when:

  • The Developmental Disabilities Services Eligibility is completed
  • Caregiver Supports Services funds are available
  • The primary caregiver selects a provider

Caregiver Supports Service is accessible to the caregiver from the start date through June 30, 2011, at which time applications will once again be offered if funds are available.

Caregiver Supports Services is 100% state funded and is for those individuals eligible for developmental disabilities services not receiving any other state services and residing with a primary caregiver who needs temporary relief. This is not related to and should not be confused with any waiver activities.

Caregiver Support provides services on a short-term, as needed basis to families caring for a loved one with a developmental disability. Under state guidelines, families are not eligible for this service if the person is already receiving state funded services through the Bureau of Developmental Disability Services (BDDS), Medicaid Waivers, Vocational Rehabilitation and/or CHOICE.

Eligibility determination and placement is made through the Bureau of Developmental Disability Services. Call: 800-545-7763.
