The Arc of Indiana honored State Representative Robert Behning with their Public Policy Award, and former State Representative Charlie Brown with their Lifetime Achievement Award, for their service and commitment to Hoosiers with developmental disabilities, at their annual Achievement Breakfast, Tuesday, November 20.
Public Policy Award
The Honorable Robert Behning
“Representative Robert Behning has committed his entire legislative career to education and as Chairman of the House Education Committee has led a multi-year effort to successfully pass the most comprehensive education reform package in the United States. He has worked tirelessly for all students in Indiana, including those who receive special education services,” Kim Dodson, The Arc of Indiana executive director, said.
“This past legislative session, Representative Behning was a champion during the diploma and graduation pathways conversations to insure that students with disabilities have multiple pathways to success and opportunities for career and post-secondary opportunities after high school. This will allow students with disabilities to graduate with the credentials they need to pursue post-secondary and employment opportunities. On behalf of students and families who will benefit from this legislation for years to come, we recognize Representative Behning with The Arc of Indiana’s Public Policy Award.”
“The Arc of Indiana does great work ensuring Hoosiers with disabilities across the state have the necessary resources to live, learn, work and participate in the community,” Representative Behning said. “Throughout the years, The Arc has been a strong advocate for students with disabilities, partnering with the legislature to provide kids with opportunities to receive high school diplomas. Together, we established a diploma for those with severe disabilities, recognizing the hard work and dedication these students put into their education. I am honored by this award, and I look forward to working with The Arc of Indiana in the future.”
Lifetime Achievement Award
The Honorable Charlie Brown
“Representative Charlie Brown’s leadership and work as chairman of the House Public Health Committee provided him with the opportunity to work diligently toward one of his primary goals: to provide affordable, accessible and high quality health care to all Indiana citizens. Among the most recent of Representative Brown’s legislative achievements was the key leadership role he played in 2007 in enacting a new statewide effort to promote improved health care for Hoosiers, known as the Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP). Indiana’s HIP Plan is recognized as one of the most innovative health care initiatives in the entire nation,” Dodson said.
“Representative Brown championed numerous pieces of legislative to improve the health and quality of life of all Hoosiers, but specifically for those who have a disability or mental health diagnosis. He has been a tireless advocate for home and community based services, tobacco cessation efforts and parity for mental health insurance. We are honored to recognize Representative Brown’s positive impact on the health and well-being of Hoosiers with The Arc of Indiana’s Lifetime Achievement Award.”
