The Arc Insurance Advocacy Resource Center Leads Way to Address Medicaid ABA Benefit Concerns

In February 2016, Indiana Medicaid began covering ABA therapy for autism spectrum disorder in Indiana.  During the first quarter of this year, Indiana Medicaid is making changes to the rule to address concerns that advocates have expressed about barriers to receive treatment and the limited number of providers who are taking Medicaid.

The Arc of Indiana, under the leadership of  Michele Trivedi, The Arc Insurance Advocacy Resource Center (INARC) Manager, drafted a policy change request and invited several advocacy groups to comment and sign on to the request.

The Arc of Indiana, Central Indiana NOFAS, Inc., About Special Kids (ASK), Indiana Disability Rights, Down Syndrome Indiana, and Mental Health America Indiana joined together to request specific changes to the Medicaid ABA therapy coverage rule to ensure that children with developmental disabilities can access this effective medical treatment.

Changes to the ABA benefit will take place in 2017 and 2018.
