April 2 is World Autism Day, and April is Autism Awareness Month.
Recently, the Centers for Disease Control released new information that 1 in 68 children in the US are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. That is a 30% increase from 2 years ago, when the number was estimated at 1 in 88.
Even with these numbers, research dollars for autism lags behind many conditions that are not nearly as prevalent.
Too many children cannot access early diagnosis and intervention because their health insurance will not cover autism.
Medicaid in Indiana does not cover ABA, the most widely accepted evidence based treatment for autism, and a treatment that is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and several other major medical societies. We must invest in autism diagnosis and treatment, and now is the time. One in 68 can’t wait!
