The Carl Erskine Story Documentary

“The Best We’ve Got, The Carl Erskine Story” premiered at the Paramount Theatre in Anderson, Indiana on August 11, 2022.

The Arc of Indiana is proud of our connection to Carl Erskine through The Arc of Indiana Foundation’s Erskine Green Training Institute (EGTI), named in honor of Carl and Steve Green and their families. Many know Carl for his career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Steve Green, Bobby Knight’s first recruit at Indiana University, went on to enjoy a successful professional basketball career with the Indiana Pacers. While they were building their careers, Carl and his wife Betty, and Steve and his wife Lana, also worked to make a significant impact in the lives of people with disabilities, inspired by their children, Jimmy Erskine and Jessica Green, who were born with Down syndrome.

The documentary, produced by Ted Green, shares not only Carl’s storied baseball career, but also his seminal role in two of the great human-rights movements of the past century, first as a teammate and close friend of Jackie Robinson, then as a pioneer in the fight for people with special needs.

Through unpublished home movies dating to the 1930s, classic archival baseball footage and more than 40 interviews, including with Tim Shriver, Vin Scully, Bob Costas, Slick Leonard, Mitch Daniels and experts in the evolution of special-needs treatment, including The Arc of Indiana CEO Kim Dodson, filmmaker Ted Green captures Carl’s inspirational, beautifully American story for posterity.
